After six months at Yoomee, I thought it was about time I said hello! I'm an unusual person to be starting out as a junior developer given I'm already 44 and have children who are nearly grown up!
When I came for interview, I was really impressed by how friendly the team is, their openness and enthusiasm for what they do. My interest was also piqued by the company's ethos – doing work for social good. One of the aspects of being a teacher I'd found so stimulating was making a difference to people's lives. So I was excited at the prospect of being able to feel the same in my new career.
I knew the interview had gone well, but also that Yoomee were looking for someone with more experience than I had to offer. So I was delighted when Andy offered me the post, with the idea of further developing my skills on the job.
My previous career was as a full-time parent for a decade and then as a primary school teacher. But a few years ago, I started to feel teaching wasn't going to suit me much longer, so I began to wonder what else I could do. I'd always played with computers, from my BBC Model B onwards and thought I might be able to develop this into work I enjoyed. So, I ended up doing a Masters degree in IT at Leeds Metropolitan University. This led me into part-time work as a student developer in Ruby on Rails, and then to Yoomee's job advert for a developer.
One of the things that makes Yoomee special, I think, is the principles behind the company. Knowing the sites you're working on are designed to make a difference to people's lives makes work more fulfilling. It also seems to mean that the projects are interesting. Since I started here, I've worked on a wide range of projects, from a social network and programme for a young photographers in Amsterdam, that was design and image heavy and needed to be pixel perfect; through a pilot project to encourage neighbours to help each other out; to a site for sharing cultural and social artefacts from people whose countries are experiencing conflict. They've all been interesting to work on and I've learnt a huge amount along the way.
I'm looking forward to developing my skills and capabilities at Yoomee in the future as we develop more great projects. If you're a client or potential client, I look forward to meeting you.
